Namur is the start of the rally and the first city we will visit on the continent. I'd never heard of this place before, so I was keen to learn more.

Namur is the capital of the Wallonia region in southern Belgium.  It is known for its strategic location, rich history, and beautiful architecture. Situated at the confluence of the Meuse and Sambre rivers, it has historically been an important military and trading hub.  Namur is also known for its stunning hilltop citadel, charming medieval streets, and status as a cultural and administrative centre in Wallonia.

Historical Significance and the Citadel

Namur's history stretches back to Roman times. However, due to its location between France and the Low Countries, it gained strategic importance in the Middle Ages. The city's most famous landmark is the Citadel of Namur, one of Europe's largest and most impressive fortifications.  

Originally built as a fortress in the 10th century, it was expanded over time and used by various European powers, including the Spanish, French, Austrians, and Dutch. Today, the citadel is open to the public. It offers spectacular panoramic views of the city and rivers, museums, and historical exhibits detailing its role in European military history.

Namur has many beautiful buildings and landmarks that reflect its history and cultural heritage:

Saint-Aubin's Cathedral: This 18th-century Baroque and classical-style cathedral is unique as the only cathedral in Belgium designed in this architectural style.  It is notable for its striking dome and stunning interior.

Belfry of Namur: Originally a 14th-century tower, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Namur's resilience and history.

Namur Citadel Gardens: The citadel grounds are surrounded by extensive gardens and walking paths, attracting tourists and locals. These green spaces, combined with the river views, make it a popular spot for leisurely strolls.

Fêtes de Wallonie: Celebrated every September, this festival commemorates Walloon culture and heritage with music, parades, and traditional activities.

Namur is the administrative capital of Wallonia, home to several government institutions.  Additionally, it has a robust economy centred around public administration, education, and tourism.  The University of Namur adds an academic dimension to the city, attracting students and fostering a vibrant, youthful atmosphere.
