We stop over in Italy in Menaggio, a town I'd never heard of before we started planning this trip, so what do we have to look forward to when we get there? A little bit about Menaggio coming up.
Menaggio is a charming lakeside town on the western shore of Lake Como, Italy. It is known for its scenic beauty and relaxed atmosphere and is a prime location for exploring the lake and nearby areas. With its beautiful promenade, historic centre, and easy access to outdoor activities, Menaggio is a popular destination for tourists seeking relaxation and adventure. It's one of the lake's main hubs. It offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and lake and a taste of authentic Italian culture.
Location and Landscape
Menaggio is about halfway up Lake Como's western shore, directly across from the town of Varenna. The town's central position makes it an excellent base for exploring other parts of the lake, with ferry connections to Bellagio, Varenna, and Cadenabbia and road access to Switzerland. Menaggio enjoys a scenic location backed by rolling hills and mountains, with a vibrant waterfront along the lake's edge.
Historic Center
The historic centre of Menaggio features cobblestone streets, colourful buildings, and a central square, Piazza Garibaldi, lined with cafes, shops, and restaurants. The town has a rich history dating back to Roman times, and remnants of ancient walls, medieval churches, and old villas add to its charm. The centre is also home to the Church of Santa Marta, with its lovely stone facade, and the Church of San Stefano, known for its elegant Baroque interior.
Menaggio's waterfront promenade is one of the most attractive in Lake Como. The palm-lined walkway offers panoramic views of the lake and nearby mountains, and benches, flowers, and sculptures enhance the relaxing atmosphere. The promenade is a popular spot for an evening passeggiata (stroll), a beloved Italian tradition.
