Another benefit of Brexit is that we will soon need authorization to visit Europe.
<slow hand clap>
We must apply for ETIAS before travelling on the European mainland, but what is it?
The ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is an electronic travel authorization system for travellers visiting certain European countries. It is not a visa but a pre-screening process to enhance border security within the Schengen Area. ETIAS will become mandatory starting in 2025.
Key Features of ETIAS
Who Needs It?
ETIAS applies to travellers from visa-exempt countries, such as the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and others, entering the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days in 180 days).
Purpose of Travel
It covers tourism, business, medical treatment, and transit purposes. Travellers who travel for other purposes, such as study or work, will need different permits or visas.
Which Countries Require ETIAS?
It is required for the Schengen Area countries, plus a few others, such as Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia. These include popular destinations like France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Application Process
- Online Application: Submit the application via the official ETIAS website or app.
- Information Required: Passport details, personal information, travel plans, and security-related questions.
- Fee: There is a small processing fee (around €7 for adults; children under 18 are exempt).
Processing Time
Most applications are processed within minutes, but some may take up to 96 hours. In rare cases, additional documentation or interviews might be required.
Validity
ETIAS authorization is valid for three years, or until the traveller’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
Purpose
ETIAS aims to enhance security by pre-screening travellers for potential risks related to illegal migration, terrorism, or public health issues.
Important Notes
ETIAS is not a visa, so travellers need not visit an embassy or consulate to obtain it.
Travellers must still meet entry requirements, such as sufficient funds and valid health insurance, as determined by individual countries.
